Of Wind and Water

This is just a quick blog about the power of wind and water. Ever since Hurricane Ike passed through Texas, I have been truly amazed at the energy of a hurricane. Hurricane Ike has left it's mark even way up here North. It turns out that just one month ago, we had a family vacation right at the very spot where Ike hit the Texas coast full force - leveling it and the beach house that we were in. Not only that, it's impacted the families that we know in the area and teachers and researchers that I work with in the Houston area. All the people we know are coping in their own way.

Here are just a few of the photos from the area where we stayed - the before and after the mixing of wind and water.

BEFORE
The house we were at on the beach.

The view from the house.

The beach...notice the area of grass and dunes.

This was from the accident we had along the coast to the ferry....notice the lighthouse in the background.

AFTER

Here's the lighthouse after the hurricane. The long grey line in front is the road we were on during the accident.

This was the ferry landing...submerged and gone.

A lone house on the coast.

This is an area that was right by where we stayed...notice the absence of dunes and houses.

The house we were in is no longer as this photo indicates. It was at the very top of this photo on the beach. All that is left of the area are marks where house stood and the lawns.

Yoikes! That is so scary! I hope everyone had flood insurance. Can't wait for the insurance companies to start trying to get out of paying for this one! I sure hope everyone left town!!
